Individual counseling
Psychotherapy is the process of working through complex mental health struggles in a supportive therapeutic environment. For decades studies have shown that therapy helps to process and heal, promoting hope and even amplifying other interventions. For example therapy in addition to medication is usually more effective than medication all by itself. Therapy plays a central role in modern treatment.
In the old days therapy was often. a one-size-fit-all process where individuals could expect prolonged discussion about the origins of emotional issues, with a focus on behavior, Sometimes this could feel shaming, and many people stayed away from therapy out of anxiety about dredging up painful memories. While elements of these techniques still exist, modern therapy is more focused on our current psychological state, with the goal of transofrmative emotional experiences within sessions. Clients should be treated as the expert of their own lives, and decide what and how much to share as the work goes on.
A few important elements of therapy are:
Privacy: The information never leaves the office.
Exploration: Counseling is about getting to know yourself. Anything that you say or feel is alright in therapy.
Cooperation: You are the expert of you. Therapy is two experts working together on a problem. You are in charge of the session’s focus.
Acceptance: You will never be judged or shamed for anything you have felt, thought, or done.
Individualization: My training is an eclectic mix of techniques, and which direction we go will be determined by our teamwork. Your therapy will not be according to a program or a technique, it is about you as an individual.
Sessions are typically 50 minutes in length once per week, but we can work out a frequency and treatment plan that works for you.
In-office and online sessions are available.
